has anyone used AVID ID to locate a lost pet?

my moms cat ran away without his id tag on but i found a paper with his micro id chip information. i filled out a form and sent it in but i want to know if anyone has used this before because this is our first time having a pet with a micro chip. i was wondering if it is some kind of gps thing because we are afraid somebody has him because he is a very nice looking cat. he is fat and fluffy. so can anyone shine some light on this sad situation.

No GPS, sorry. The way microchips work is that when the cat is found and taken to either a vet or animal shelter, it should be scanned with a reader. The reader will pick up on the chip and then they should be able to look up the number and find your information. In the mean time, you should contact your local animal control agency and let them know you cat is missing. They post this information in case someone finds your cat.
